La Ballade de Jim – Alain Souchon

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

(December 4, 2008) Can Detroit learn the lessons of its global competitors in time to survive? America’s “Big Three” automakers put it this way: either Congress comes through with a multi-billion dollar bailout, or at least one of them will fail. GM, Ford and Chrysler say “small and fuel-efficient” is now their new mantra. Lacquer – Overloaded – Behind

Friday, May 28th, 2010

BEEP! “Hey, it’s me. So, I’m leaving LA tomorrow… I’ll pick you up in New Mexico by Tuesday… We have to be in New York by Saturday so… I’ll see you soon!” click! Olivier “Twist” Gondry, Michel’s brother and visual effects guy for many years, begins his quest into direction with a video that sets two guys careening across America in a vintage Chrysler convertible – a 1966 Chrysler 300 to be exact. RES’s Sandy Hunter: “The video consists of digitally fast forwarded time lapse 16mm photography shot from a rig set up in the back seat. The entire seven-day journey, shot at one frame per second of driving (one frame per 10 seconds at night) is compressed into less than four minutes.” The Gondry spirit comes through in Olivier’s editing, synchronizing the song with the scenery and showing countless little tidbits of life. We get to see each night’s motel stay, and stops for map-checks and car washes. We also get to see the dramatic, slow beauty of the weather, and the variety of American landscapes: skyscrapers, towering bluffs, limitless sky, and unending freeway. Like Star Guitar, a psychedelic trip through the French landscape, Behind delivers a picture of America that is celebratory and, for me, filled with love for the country. The song hums along: “Yooou-oo-oo-oo-oo, and your smile!” while the two gentlemen end their journey in NYC’s blazing night, exit the car, and perhaps go for coffee. The concept of Behind is predated by a Lars von Trier concept (and a video

Scenes from the DVD “Ply-Split Garlic Basket” with instructor Linda Hendrickson

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Learn a new technique for twined baskets: Ply-splitting! Here are scenes from the first DVD on the subject. Linda Hendrickson leads you step-by-step through the process of making her original ply-split garlic basket design. You will see clearly how to use a gripfid and Danish cord to create the ply-split twined structures, and how to shape the basket. With this basic knowledge, you can create your own designs. The basket uses techniques of ply-split braiding, found mainly in the desert between India and Pakistan. Today only a few old men are still carrying on the tradition of using sticks, fingers and goat hair to create exquisitely-patterned ply-split girths for their camels. Contemporary fiber artists are keeping the techniques alive by using them in new ways, and with new materials. The DVD and basket kits are available on Linda’s website.
