The design is genious, just take the very last thing you say, the selenoid is grounded via the starter motor, at least half the selenoid.
They solved 3 problems at once
1. simple, only one contact switch.
2. Save power, it take lot of energy to move those things, but not much to hold it.
3. Sparks generated when a switch control hundreds of amps.
So the selenoid has 2 coils , and the main one get short connected by the contacts, sending a inductive reverse spark killing pulse.
Thanks Dave, now i can solve my problem with the starter of my CJ 9…
I only have to remove it from the engine and follow your instructions as shown in your video !
@ii7u LLOL i no how ya feel i got a guy who shoves the book under our noses and teaches us that way. or look up on the comp how 2 fix it. hell i mite consider makin a u tube channel on it

my 89 chevy makes a terrble grinding noise when i start it then when it starts its fine do you you think that my bearings are shot in my starter?
