Detailed test drive and evaluation of a 2004 Jaguar XJR with Chris from Chicago Cars Direct. Once upon a time the boundaries between luxury sedan and sports car were clearly defined. Sure, you had your odd Chrysler 300 or Mercedes 6.9, but for the most part you had luxury sedans and you had performance sedans, with any attempt to combine the two resulting in major compromises. But when Jaguar introduced the XJR in 1995, the company unleashed a truly inspired luxury sedan that, by 1998, also sported a supercharged V8 and 322 horsepower. Handling, like the rest of the XJ line, was excellent, at least by luxury car standards. It took five years, but BMW eventually unleashed its M5 in 2000, a model that finally offered Corvette-like performance with luxury sedan amenities in a single vehicle. It boasted a 394-horsepower V8, enough to send many a supercar packing in terms of acceleration. Mercedes responded with the E55 AMG, also in 2000, but it produced a “mere” 349 horsepower and couldn’t be had with a manual transmission (the only tranny available in the M5 was a shift-it-yourself six-speed). Mercedes has since responded with an all-new E55 on the revised E-Class platform; this one makes 469 horsepower via a supercharged V8. BMW has no M5 for the 2004 model year because an entirely new 5 Series is being introduced. But rumors of a forthcoming M5, featuring a 500-horsepower V10 engine, persist. Big changes at GM for 1970 included the end of the corporate edict forbidding engines larger than 400 cubic inches in its intermediate models. Chevrolets big-block V8 was enlarged to 454 ci and formed the basis of the LS6 option, intended to help Chevrolet wrest control of Super Stock drag racing from Chrysler. The redesigned 1970 Chevelle SS was the perfect platform for the LS6 engine, which was underrated at 450 hp and 500 ft-lb of torque. It was backed by either an M22 Rock Crusher 4-speed manual or hard-shifting M40 Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Depending on rear-end gearing, which ranged from 3.31:1 to 4.10:1 from the factory, LS6 Chevelles were capable of easy 13-second quarter miles. Diehard Chevrolet racers Ralph Truppi and Tommy Kling of New Jersey dominated the NHRAs North East Division during the 1960s. Truppi was a skilled interpreter of the NHRA rulebook, relying on brainpower rather than financial power for the competitive edge. Truppi later joined forces with Kling, and found Ray Allen, a talented young driver. The Truppi-Kling team focused on incredibly careful preparation, a major factor in their success. When the SS 454 LS6 Chevelle was introduced, Truppi-Kling ordered a Fathom Blue convertible with a column-shifted M40 automatic for a planned assault on the NHRA SS/E class.
