Building the 1969 Plymouth Barracuda 383

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

This is the build process of the AMT ERTL 1/25 scale 1969 Plymouth Barracuda 383 V8 fastback hardtop. Yes, another Plymouth I know – but the model car collection did need a fillup of Mopar products after building numerous Chevrolet and Ford models, next on the agenda is a Dodge Daytona… – it was a great car to make though, and proved easy… The Barracuda was the Chrysler answer to the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro, however unlike the Mustang and Camaro, eventual Cuda production ended in 1974! Soundtrack is Seether – “69 Tea” (2003)

1976 Plymouth Volare vs. Chevy Nova Promo Commercial

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

First year for the Volare, the replacement for the Plymouth Valiant introduction promo. This film was created for Chrysler Plymouth Dealer Salesmen to introduce them with the brand new from the ground up car. In the first model year for the Volare, 255008 Volares were produced. Although this film portrays the car as quality built, it was plagued by poor build quality and a number of Recalls. One major recall was to replace front fenders which rusted on the tops of the part. As a teenager working in a Chrysler owned Dodge Dealer (factory owned store) we did hundreds of fender replacement for literally years. Our own family’s 77 Dodge Diplomat received new fenders under the Aspen and Volare recall and warranty. Many will remember the TV commercials which featured Sergio Frankie Singing the song “Volare”.

1968 Plymouth Barracuda 426 Hemi Under the Hood

www.e-motorclassics.com Hemi Engine History A Chrysler Hemi engine is one of three different internal combustion engine families from the Chrysler Corporation that are Hemi engines; in other words, they utilize a hemispherical combustion chamber. A hemispherical cylinder head allows the valves to be inline rather than side-by-side, which gives a straighter, simpler airflow path, allows large valves, and gives greater efficiency. The hemi design places the sparkplug in the center, giving more even ignition. The advantages of the hemi cylinder head come at the disadvantage of requiring intake and exhaust valve stems that point in different directions, requiring much more complicated rocker arm setups in overhead valve engines. These also increase the space taken up by the cylinder head; Hemi engines are not space-efficient. The hemispherical head designed engines were the first engines in 1964 to officially use the “Hemi” name, a word Chrysler trademarked. All Chrysler Hemi engines of the 1960s displaced 426 in³ (7.0 L). Although just 11000 Hemi engines were produced for consumer sale, the engine became legendary, with “Hemi” becoming one of the most familiar automobile-related words in the United States. The 426 Hemi was nicknamed the “elephant engine” at the time, a reference to its far-from-compact dimensions and extraordinary power.
